As women, we often question whether we are normal. You know the story. Is my nose too big? Are my breasts perky enough? Are my teeth the perfect shade of white? As much as we are all beautifully normal in our own right, for one reason or another the mentality doesn’t change when it comes to the size of your vagina. So, what is the average depth of a vagina? And is it possible to have a loose vagina? Let’s find out.
What is a vagina?
First, we need to clear up the confusion surrounding what female body part the term “vagina” refers to. For many people, vagina is often used in reference to the vulva; the outer part of female genitalia, including the labia, clitoris, urethra, and vaginal opening. The vagina is the inner canal lined with nerves and mucus membranes. The vagina plays an essential role in linking the uterus and cervix to the external body to enable menstruation, intercourse, and childbirth.
How deep is a vagina?
Turns out the depth of a vagina can vary from person to person with lengths ranging from 6.86 cm to 14.81 cm, and widths ranging from 4.8 to 6.3 cm. Of course, it’s normal to have a vagina less and more than these figures. Truth confirmed: your vagina is normal no matter how deep it is.
What can affect the depth of a vagina?
The vagina is one versatile body part. When sexually aroused the mucus membranes inside the vagina produce lubrication as the vagina expands in length and width to accommodate a larger sized penis (or sex toy). The lubrication will also ease the friction of penetration to minimise the risk of injury during sex.
During childbirth, the vagina undergoes a massive transformation into a passageway through which a baby is delivered. Due to the flexible nature of the vagina, it can stretch to accommodate delivery before returning to its normal size six to eight weeks post childbirth.
Is it possible to have a loose vagina?
You’ve probably heard the vagina myth that too much sex leads to a loose vagina. The thing is; the vagina is a highly adaptable part of the female body. Just like a rubber band, it has the ability to snap back into its former shape and size. So, while having sex with a penis or using a sex toy may temporarily stretch out a vagina, the change is not permanent. Your vagina will return to its former self.
The only two factors that can cause a vagina to loosen are age and childbirth. Women who have experienced more than one vaginal birth are prone to weakened vaginal muscles. As for ageing, it is common for the vagina’s elasticity to diminish and cause a subtle, natural loosening over time, particularly during perimenopause when oestrogen levels begin to drop.
