What is the main cause of psoriasis?

Science is yet to determine what causes psoriasis, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, immune system, and environmental factors.1

The immune system triggers an abnormal response, leading to the rapid growth of skin cells and the hallmark symptoms of psoriasis. Environmental factors such as stress, certain infections, and certain medications can also cause psoriasis flare-ups.1

Which is the best treatment for psoriasis?

The best psoriasis treatment depends on individual circumstances, the type of psoriasis, and symptom severity.

Treatment options may include topical steroids that slow skin cell production and reduce inflammation, redness, and itching.1

FAQs about psoriasis treatment

The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown; however, it is believed to be related to an overactive immune system. This means that the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing them to multiply faster than normal. This leads to a build-up of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, resulting in the hallmark red, scaly patches of psoriasis.1

Our medical team prescribes treatment for people over 18 who have been diagnosed with mild psoriasis and used medication before. People with severe psoriasis will need an in-person consultation with a GP or specialist in the offline world.

Not yet diagnosed, but keen to use Youly for convenient access to psoriasis treatment in the future? Feel free to revisit once a GP has diagnosed you, and we’ll organise fast treatment delivery to your door then.

The type of psoriasis treatment prescribed will vary depending on where your body is experiencing psoriasis and which treatments have or haven’t worked previously.

Our medical team prescribes monthly treatments starting at $25. Remember that one prescription may last longer than a month, depending on the regularity and severity of your flare-ups. You can easily manage prescription renewals in your patient portal if you need to move one forward or push one back.

Anyone can develop psoriasis. However, it most commonly affects people between 15 and 35. People with a family history of psoriasis are more likely to develop the condition, and those with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions, such as HIV or diabetes. Psoriasis can also be triggered by stress, certain medications, and other environmental factors.1

Unfortunately, science hasn’t yet discovered a cure for psoriasis, and it isn’t a condition that’ll disappear on its own. For now, the best chance at managing psoriasis lies in effective treatments that reduce symptom severity and flare-ups. That includes topical steroid creams and oral medications.1

While both options serve a purpose, over-the-counter treatments are generally milder and less effective. Prescription psoriasis treatments are typically more potent and effective, meaning you should see results sooner.

Speak with your Youly medical team to find the best treatment for your psoriasis symptoms.

Corticosteroids have proven to help psoriasis and be well tolerated. Always follow the instructions provided by your Youly medical team to maintain safety and efficacy, and limit the risk of side effects.

All medications have a set of potential side effects. In the case of topical steroids, side effects include burning, stinging, and redness of the skin. More serious side effects include skin thinning, stretch marks, and skin colour changes. Not everyone will experience side effects. But they are a risk.1

If you notice any side effects, stop using the treatment and reach out to your Youly medical team via the patient portal.
