What is the morning after pill?
What is it? Emergency Contraception, also known as The Morning After Pill (or MAP) is a form of emergency contraception. While it is called the morning after pill, some types can be taken up to 5 days after unprotected sex. Other types need to be taken sooner. It’s best to take it within 24 hours. It is not intended for regular use and is meant to reduce the risk of pregnancy.
How does it work? The morning after pill works by preventing or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary. It may also inhibit the sperm from fertilising an already released egg. It is important to note that if fertilisation has already occurred, the pill will not be effective.
When can I use it? Emergency contraception is often considered after unprotected sex, if your protection broke, in cases of non-consensual intercourse, if you missed your regular contraception or if you are experiencing vomiting or diarrhoea that might have affected the effectiveness of other contraception.
How do I access the Morning After Pill? There are flexible solutions to accommodate your needs. You do not need a prescription to get emergency contraception in Australia.
