In all honesty, it doesn’t take a lot to be happy and content with life. However, it is completely normal to sometimes fall off the bandwagon and jeopardise your personal happiness. We’re all human after all. As a gentle reminder, check out 7 habits on how to be happy in life.

Smile more

When it comes to smiling, the saying “fake it till you make it” couldn’t be truer. Smiling triggers a chemical reaction in the brain that causes a release of the hormones dopamine and serotonin. We all know dopamine is the body’s feel-good hormone, whereas serotonin is associated with reduced stress. So, if you’re seeking a double whammy approach on how to be happy, turn that frown upside down.

Live within your means

Constant financial strain can negatively impact your physical and mental health. Living within your means, or spending less than you earn, is a great way to get on top of your money problems and eliminate financial worry. Start by creating a budget, saving a little each pay, have an emergency fund on standby, limit credit card usage, and look for ways to boost your income through investments or side hustles.

Drop the ego

Ego is your self-image; your social mask; the person you become so other people like you. The thing is, ego is a fear-based state that thrives on approval and power. When you learn to let go of what other people think and authentically live your life based on what feels good for you in any moment, that is where true happiness lies. That is how to be happy.

Unplug from technology

Technology is great, there’s no doubt about that. But, when too much technology causes you to become disconnected from life, that’s a clear sign you need to focus on how to be happy by unplugging from technology. That includes your smartphone, tablet, laptop, television – the works. You’ll have more time to relax your mind and spend time on other more meaningful tasks.

Give back

Giving back is a selfless act that 100-percent makes you feel good. Whether you’re helping at a local homeless shelter, donating clothes to the local thrift store, or mentoring a younger member of the community, when you selflessly give back your body releases endorphins that are bound to make you feel happy. So, enjoy the buzz, you totally deserve it.

Socialise

For an express route to happiness, try catching up with your friends. Meaningful conversations, laughter, connection, and sharing what’s on your mind are huge benefits of socialisation that can quickly transform feelings from mediocre to grand.

Practice gratitude

The word gratitude gets thrown around a lot these days. And as silly and cliché as it may seem, the practice of gratitude does have the power to harness happiness in your life. It’s as simple as appreciating the small things, looking for positives in negative situations, practicing mindfulness and expressing thanks to those who play a part in making your life better.
